The GLAD Technique to shift focus:

Every day, make a point to record:

  • “G” One Gratitude that you have – Something you are thankful for – major or minor

  • “L” One new thing you Learned today – Something you recognized, or figured out

  • “A” One Accomplishment you did today – Something you feel is meaningful, even self-care

  • D” One thing that Delighted you today – Something made you smile, laugh, or feel joyful

Altman (2014)

Check Your Gauges:

  • How does my body feel? (tense/relaxed; tired/rested; energized/out of shape)

  • How is my sleep? (adequate, too much, too little, disrupted)

  • How is my appetite? Am I maintaining, gaining, losing weight?

  • How is my mood?

  • What emotion(s) am I experiencing? Name it.

  • What are my thoughts? About myself? About others? About my current situation?

  • How am I managing strong, uncomfortable feelings?

  • What behaviors are helpful? Harmful? Need to change?

  • What one step will I take today to change my focus? My reactions? My routines?

  • What is my Soul’s cry? What do I long for God to hear? What is my deepest prayer?
